On Easter morning my wife, Sue, and I attended St. Peter’s Fireside. My daughters Clara and Nellie and my long-time friend Don Lewis also attend there. Alastair preached the sermon that morning. He recalled the event of Mary Magdalene encountering Jesus Christ on the morning of His resurrection from the dead. Alastair talked about how confused and amazed Mary was and how Jesus both reassured  and encouraged her that his resurrection was just the beginning of the great and beautiful things God was going to do. It was just the beginning of a new and profoundly loving relationship for her and all mankind with God the Father. To emphasize his point, Alastair referred to a passage from the very last paragraph of C. S. Lewis’ The Last Battle. Lewis writes

“All their life in this world and all their adventures in Narnia had only been the cover and title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story…..in which every chapter is better than the one before.”

Christ’s resurrection brings a new beginning–a new Great Story which goes on forever with love, joy, grace, justice, blessings, delights we cannot imagine. My own new story began almost forty years ago when Don Lewis and his household helped me to encounter the real and risen Jesus. Back then I could never have imagined the great delight of worshipping forty years later in an Easter service where my daughter Nellie played the violin and where my wife and I received the bread and wine of communion from my daughter Clara and my friend Don Lewis.

There is so much to be thankful for, and this is only the title page!
